She notes, \u201cDoctors are trained in diagnosis and treatment but rarely in how to communicate with patients effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her project, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6836600\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Development and Introduction of a Communication Skills Module for Postgraduate Students of Ophthalmology<\/a>,\u201d introduced an eight-day workshop featuring interactive lectures, video analysis, and role playing exercises.<\/p>\n<p>The response was overwhelmingly positive. \u201cFaculty recognized that communication gaps contribute to patient dissatisfaction, and students saw immediate improvement in their interactions,\u201d she says. \u201cThey wanted the workshop to be a permanent part of their training.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Bringing Empathy into Medical Training<\/h3>\n<p>Encouraged by her success at CMCL-FRI, Dr. Bhagat sought to make an even greater impact through her International FAIMER Institute Fellowship project, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10947765\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nurturing Empathy through Arts, Literature, and Role Play for Postgraduate Trainees of Ophthalmology<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmpathy is essential in medicine, but it is not formally taught,\u201d she explains. \u201cI wanted to see if storytelling, arts, and role playing could help doctors connect with their patients on a deeper level.\u201d\u00a0The results were striking. Students became more empathetic, patients noticed the difference, and trainees recommended making it part of medical education. Expanding her research, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11691101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she surveyed 150 faculty members and 127 postgraduate trainees<\/a> across specialties, confirming that structured empathy training is crucial.<\/p>\n<h3>The FAIMER Experience<\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Bhagat describes her fellowship as life-changing. \u201cFAIMER is not just about learning. It is about transforming how we teach, lead, and grow,\u201d she says. \u201cThe mentorship, global collaboration, and real-world application made me a better educator and clinician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, she was selected by her peers as a FAIMER Connect Ambassador, helping to strengthen FAIMER\u2019s online community and foster connections worldwide. \u201cThe FAIMER network is incredible. It is a lifelong community of educators who inspire and support one another,\u201d she says.\u00a0Her journey is a testament to dedication, innovation, and lifelong learning. It is an inspiring example of how education can shape the future of health care.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Storytellers series brings the work of Intealth to life through the stories of the people we serve. FAIMER offers fellowship programs for health professions educators through the online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faimer.org\/international-faimer-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International FAIMER Institute<\/a> <i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i> and ten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faimer.org\/faimer-regional-institutes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAIMER Regional Institutes<\/a> <i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i> in Chile, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, and Uganda.
