FAIMER® Competency-based Education Pilot Program Going International

FAIMER, a division of Intealth™, offers programs in professional development to international health professions educators with the goal of advancing quality in health care education worldwide. FAIMER’s Competency-based Education (FACE) program, which was launched in India as a pilot program in 2021, is expanding to include health professions educators from the FAIMER Regional Institutes (FRIs) around the world.

FACE is a year-long, part-time, virtual professional development program designed to serve the global need for professional development in competency-based education for health professions educators. The pilot of the FACE program included faculty members nominated from the four FRIs in India: CMCL-FRI at Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, GSMC-FRI at Seth G.S. Medical College in Mumbai, MAHE-FRI for Leadership in Interprofessional Education at Manipal Academy of Higher Education in Manipal, and PSG-FRI at PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Coimbatore.

These FRIs were selected for the pilot to address a mandate by the National Medical Council of India to include competency-based education in the Indian medical school curriculum. This mandate impacts faculty at more than 600 medical schools throughout India. Directors at the four FRIs in India each nominated five faculty members. Nineteen faculty members completed the FACE pilot program in 2022.

After reviewing the successful completion of the pilot and implementing improvements from evaluation findings, FAIMER is opening the program to FRI faculty around the world. The program, now titled International FAIMER Competency-based Education (I-FACE), began on July 31, 2023, with 17 faculty members representing 13 institutions from Chile, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, and Uganda.

Dr. Rashmi Vyas, Senior Associate, FAIMER Global Programs Lead, commented, “The expansion of FACE will serve the global need for professional development in competency-based education, which has emerged as a priority topic for health professions educators worldwide.”
